The Speigletown Fire District holds its 2027 budget hearing Monday at 6 p.m. at the firehouse
The Speigletown Fire District’s public hearing on its 2027 budget is Monday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the firehouse, 146 Speigletown Road (Route 40). That is the Board of Fire Commissioners’ regular third-Monday meeting, and the hearing is open to anyone who lives in the district.
The posting we know of is the district’s electronic sign in front of the firehouse, which lists a public budget meeting for that date and time. As of Sunday there was no notice on speigletownfire.org or on the Town of Schaghticoke or Town of Brunswick websites. If a written notice turns up, we will link it here.
Why it is worth an hour
Fire districts are their own small governments. Five elected commissioners set a budget that is paid almost entirely by property tax, and it shows up on your January town and county bill as the fire protection line, separate from the town’s own levy. State Town Law section 181 requires the commissioners to hold a public hearing on the proposed budget during the third week of October, with the proposed budget available ahead of time from the district secretary and at the town clerk’s office, and the adopted budget filed with the town by early November.
This year’s budget is $671,477, split between taxpayers in Schaghticoke and the Brunswick corner of the district. Our fire department page has the 2026 budget line by line: apparatus, insurance, the firehouse, turnout gear and training, and the reserves. Monday is the one chance to ask what changes for 2027 before the number is set.
If you cannot make it, the commissioners meet at the firehouse on the third Monday of every month at 6 p.m., and the adopted budget will be on file with the Town Clerk at Town Hall in Melrose. We will report the 2027 figures as soon as we have the document.
The Johnsonville Fire District, which covers part of the eastern town, holds its own hearing Tuesday at 7 p.m.; our story on that is here. Both are on our events calendar.
