Our Speigletown site

The Speigletown church has a chapel in addition to the main church — a quiet space for prayer and reflection before the Blessed Sacrament. The site was designed as a multi-use facility, with office and classroom space and a large hall for church and community functions; a patio and barbecue pit were added outside the parish hall in recent years. The parish rectory is here as well.

A young parish with deep roots

Transfiguration Parish is young, but its roots in Northern Rensselaer County run deep — the result of nearly two centuries of parishes founded, expanded, and eventually brought together.

  1. 1839 St. John’s is founded in Schaghticoke on September 6 — eight years before the Diocese of Albany even existed.
  2. late 1860s St. Monica’s is established as a mission church of St. John’s.
  3. 1888–89 St. Monica’s becomes a parish (1888) and Our Lady of Good Counsel is established (1889). St. Monica’s takes charge of two more missions — St. Bridget’s in Buskirk and St. George’s in Pittstown.
  4. 1917 St. George’s in Pittstown becomes a separate parish.
  5. 1970 St. Bonaventure’s parish begins in Speigletown on November 13.
  6. 2001 St. John’s, St. Monica’s, and Our Lady of Good Counsel merge into the Church of the Holy Trinity on April 22 — three parishes becoming one worshipping community.
  7. 2010 Through the Diocese of Albany’s “Called to be Church” process, Holy Trinity and St. Bonaventure’s merge to form Transfiguration Parish on July 1, with worship sites in both Schaghticoke and Speigletown.

The parish carries treasures from the churches that came before it. The Schaghticoke church holds stained-glass windows donated by the first ten pastors of St. Monica’s, and Stations of the Cross hand-carved in Italy for St. Monica’s — fixtures there since the 2001 merger.
