Who plows which roads, the winter parking rules, and how to report a road that hasn't been cleared.
Snow and ice on Speigletown's roads are handled by different agencies depending on the road. Knowing who plows what tells you who to call.
Who plows what
- Town of Schaghticoke Highway Department plows the town's local roads, about 88 miles of them, broken into 8 snow routes that each take roughly four hours to complete. Please be patient with the crews during a storm.
- NYSDOT (state) plows Route 40 / Speigletown Road and other state highways.
- Rensselaer County plows the county routes.
- On the Brunswick side of the community, the Town of Brunswick Highway Department plows that town's roads and sets its own winter parking rules.
Winter parking: November 1 to April 1
To keep the plows moving, the Town of Schaghticoke restricts on-street parking on town and county roads from November 1 through April 1, on an odd/even basis by the calendar date:
- Odd-numbered days: park only on the odd-house-number side of the street (7:00 a.m. that day until 7:00 a.m. the next).
- Even-numbered days: park only on the even-house-number side.
The odd side is the west side of streets that run north–south, and the south side of streets that run east–west; the even side is the opposite. Vehicles parked in violation may be towed at the owner's expense. Brunswick-side residents should check the Town of Brunswick's own rules.
Report a road problem
- Town roads (unplowed road, pothole, missing sign, clogged catch basin, or a mailbox damaged by plowing): Town of Schaghticoke Highway Department, Superintendent Shawn Hayes, 518-573-5549, highwaysupt@townofschaghticoke.org.
- Route 40 and other state roads: NYSDOT via 511NY (or dial 511).
Two winter reminders
- Don't push snow into the road. Throwing or plowing snow from a driveway or sidewalk onto a public road is against New York law (V&T Law §1219(a)) because it endangers other drivers.
- Mailboxes should sit at least 42 inches above the ground so the plows can clear the road edge. If yours is damaged by plowing, call the Highway Department.
