What information this site sees, what it doesn't, and how to reach us.

This is an independent, community-run website for Speigletown, NY. It is not a government agency and does not sell anything. We try to collect as little about you as possible. This page explains what happens when you visit.
No accounts, no sign-in
You don't create an account or log in to use this site, and we don't ask for your name, address, or other personal details to browse it.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, which pages are useful (for example, how many people read a news post or open the map). Google Analytics uses cookies and processes information such as your IP address and general location, browser, and the pages you view. We use this only to improve the site. See Google's Privacy Policy, and you can opt out with Google's browser add-on or your browser's cookie controls.
Ask Dort (AI assistant)
"Ask Dort" answers questions using the town's public records and this site's pages. When you send a question, it is transmitted to our server and processed by Cloudflare Workers AI to generate an answer; your IP address is used only to rate-limit the feature and prevent abuse, and common answers may be cached (not tied to you) to keep it fast. We do not store your conversation on our servers.
Your recent conversation is saved only in your own browser, using local storage (this is not a cookie and is never sent to us), for up to 24 hours so it stays with you as you move between pages. You can erase it at any time with the "New chat" button, or by clearing your browser's site data. Please don't type sensitive personal information into Ask Dort, and remember its answers are AI-generated summaries — verify anything important against the official documents.
Forms and submissions
Our "submit news or an issue" and "add your business" forms open your own email app so you can send us a message. There is no database on this site collecting form entries. Anything you send reaches us by email at hello@speigletown.org, so please share only what you're comfortable putting in an email, and don't include other people's private information.
Third-party services
A few features load content from other providers. When they do, those providers can see your IP address and set their own cookies, under their own privacy policies:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and serves our images (delivery and security logs).
- CARTO supplies the background map tiles on the Map page.
- Open-Meteo powers the local weather and air-quality widget.
- National Weather Service (weather.gov) provides severe-weather alerts.
- Google provides the analytics described above.
The weather and alert features use Speigletown's fixed coordinates, not your device's location. We don't ask for or track your precise location.
The public data behind the site
Much of this site compiles public and local information: the Town of Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, the Speigletown Fire District, public assessment rolls, OpenStreetMap, and local news outlets, among others. The map uses parcel coordinates only: owner names, mailing addresses, and parcel ID numbers are removed before anything reaches this site, and the dots are not clickable. If you believe something here is inaccurate, or you want information about you or your property reviewed, contact us and we'll look into it.
Children
This site is a general community resource and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser and use the Google Analytics opt-out above. For corrections or removal requests, email hello@speigletown.org.

We may update this page as the site changes. When we do, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top.
