Some construction projects end with a ribbon-cutting. In Speigletown they end with a Facebook post full of emojis, which is better. ”💥 The deck is done!! ✅ wooohooo!!” announced the Rustic Barn Pub on Saturday afternoon, August 23.
And a fine deck it is: fresh light-gray decking, café tables under a proper umbrella, planters along the old red barn wall, a wood privacy screen, and string lights on the railing waiting for dusk. The pub says the finishing touches are still coming, with more tables, more lights, a sunshade and more plants on the list. But the hard part is built, and around here the distance between “built” and “occupied by someone with a basket of wings” is measured in minutes.
The timing could hardly be better. The Barn’s music year kicks back into full swing in September. The Thursday open mic runs all year, bands return Friday and Saturday nights, and the Second Sunday Bluegrass Jam starts its season on September 13 at 5:30 p.m. (our calendar has the lineup). Now there’s a place to take the intermission air that isn’t the parking lot.
The Rustic Barn has anchored the corner at 150 Speigletown Road since 1992, as a pub, a smokehouse, and one of the Capital District’s best-loved live-music rooms. A business that’s been feeding this hamlet for thirty-four years just made itself a little more room to do it. Go christen the deck while the evenings still cooperate. The ribs taste the same outside, which is to say excellent.
