Some of the biggest days at the Speigletown firehouse aren’t emergencies. On Saturday, September 20, 2025, more than 2,600 neighbors filled the grounds at 146 Speigletown Road for the Reverse Rett Upstate NY Fall Festival, a family fundraiser that has quietly become one of the country’s most successful grassroots efforts against Rett Syndrome.
What it’s for
Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that can leave those affected unable to walk, talk, or use their hands. The festival raises money for the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, the organization funding the search for a cure. The event is organized by Alyssa and Rick Otis, whose son Barrett lives with Rett Syndrome.
A record year
The 2025 festival was the biggest yet, raising more than $325,000 with a record 2,612 people attending. Over four years the event has raised nearly $1.2 million, making the Upstate New York community one of the largest single contributors to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust.
What the day looks like
It’s built to be a family day out, with:
- Live music from multiple bands
- Food trucks
- A cornhole tournament
- A dunk tank
- Raffles and silent auctions
- Kids’ activities like a rock wall and bouncy slides
More than a fundraiser
Beyond the money raised, the organizers use the day to build a support network for local families facing rare diseases, encouraging attendees to connect with others navigating similar challenges.
