Town puts trash & recycling collection out to bid for 2027–2028

The Town of Schaghticoke has issued a notice to bidders for its next residential garbage, recycling, and yard-waste collection contract. The current curbside service is run by County Waste; this bid covers the two-year term of January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2028, with up to three optional one-year renewals.

The deadline

Sealed bids are due by 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Town Clerk’s office, Town Hall, 290 Northline Drive, Melrose.
Bids are opened and read aloud just after (3:05 p.m.). Faxes aren’t accepted; each bid needs a 5% bid bond or certified check.

This is a contractor procurement, not a resident action item — but it’s worth knowing what the town is asking for, because it sets your service for the next two years.

What the specs call for (what it means for your curb)

For residents, the contract the town is bidding out looks a lot like today’s trash & recycling service:

Weekly curbside pickup, year-round, Monday–Friday, starting no earlier than 4:00 a.m.
Solid waste and single-stream recycling each in their own cart — the contractor provides 65-gallon carts (or 95-gallon on request, at no extra charge).
Yard waste collected weekly April through November, in paper yard-waste bags, at no extra charge.
Town trash goes to the ERCSWMA B-3 Transfer Station in Canaan (the town is a member of the Eastern Rensselaer County Solid Waste Management Authority); the hauler picks the recycling and yard-waste sites, subject to town/authority approval.
The contractor also services about 18 community properties — Town Hall, firehouses, the ambulance corps, the library, American Legion posts, and churches — at no cost to them.

For scale, the specs note the town has roughly 2,744 residential units, and in 2025 generated about 2,140 tons of trash and 763 tons of recyclables.

Whoever wins, existing collection days are to be kept “to the extent practicable,” and any route or day change must be mailed to affected residents (with the Supervisor’s approval) by December 1 before it takes effect — so watch your mailbox late this year.
