County sewer rents rise 18 percent in January, with two more increases to follow. Here is who pays it and who does not.

The county’s sewer district is raising its rents for the first time in several years, and by a lot in the first step. The Rensselaer County Sewer District No. 1 Board of Commissioners voted the increase on August 27, and the County Legislature held the required public hearing on Tuesday, October 13.

The schedule, from the county’s published notice:

  • Metered rate, per 1,000 gallons: $4.20 now; $4.96 on January 1, 2027; $5.26 in 2028; $5.58 in 2029.
  • Metered minimum, per quarter: $58.28 now ($233.12 a year); $68.77 in 2027 ($275.08); $72.90 in 2028; $77.27 in 2029.
  • Unmetered flat rate, per unit per year: $295.72 now; $348.95 in 2027; $369.89 in 2028; $392.08 in 2029.

That is an 18 percent increase in the first year and about 33 percent over the three. The hearing is held under the county’s sewer rent local laws of 1976 and 1994, which also give customers a right of appeal; a companion local law introduced October 13 would move the Legislature’s annual deadline for acting on the rent schedule and appeals from October 1 to December 15, with a vote expected November 10.

Who this applies to. Sewer District No. 1 is the county district serving the Troy and Greenbush area; its customers are billed under the district’s schedule, in most cases through their city or town. The Town of Schaghticoke runs its own sewer service through its Water and Sewer Department and sets its own rates by Town Board resolution. If your sewer bill comes from the town, nothing here changes it. Lansingburgh residents are City of Troy sewer customers, and Troy’s proposed 2027 budget separately raises the city’s water rate by 50 cents per 1,000 gallons; see our Troy budget story.
